Jesters and Junkies is a novella of approximately 100 pages (25,000 words).

Meet Riley Reid, a private investigator in small town Virginia. A product of parental abandonment, and far too much time spent at the police station, Riley's personality gives a unique perspective to every case.

Riley is hired by grieving parents to investigate the death of a young man in his prime. He even had a baby on the way. Police rule it an accidental overdose, but neither Riley or her new clients believe it.

Through her investigations, Riley is thrown into a drug conspiracy far larger than she ever expected. Suddenly, she's breaking into rehab centers, trailing suspects and fighting off gun-wielding invaders.

Come and join Riley in the sleepy town of Stone Harbor and lose yourself in the mystery.

I feel Amazon's star rating is a bit limiting - therefore, I've rated this book at my own personal rating of 4.5 Stars. The author has done a great job of writing a detective story without all the hype of over-the-top violence, sex or foul language. I really enjoyed reading this. It took me a lot longer to finish reading than I had wanted due to work load, but when reading I was immersed in the story which is a sign of a good book. I really enjoyed the gentler approach to this detective story. If you're not hooked on modern-day over-the-top action, then I'm sure you will enjoy this book. I am looking forward to the next book in her series.

Jesters and Junkies Book 1 Riley Reid Mysteries edition by Jamie Garrett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The book is just boring. The plot wasn't bad but the writing wasn't great and the character sounded robotic and boring. Since it's written in 1st person, as you can imagine the writing and story feel exactly as lifeless character.
I really hate that makes you write 20 words of review. I really hate that makes you write 20 words of review.
This is a well written novel set in the early 21st century about a young female private investigator who is determined to find out how a dead “Junkie/drug addict” came to be left on the steps of a local hospital. It is a gripping story of how she goes undercover to unravel how an addict who was rehabilitated at a reputable facility ends up dead and on those steps. An easy and absorbing read with much food for thought. I only found 7 typos which I have recorded for the author or publisher should they want them. Good luck with the rest of the series Jamie Garrett!
Although I gave this story 3 stars, I debated over whether it warranted 3 or 4. It was a nice read, clean and smooth writing, with well developed characters. But the main plot line was weak. It should have taken more work and finesse for the private investigator, Reilly, to uncover the truth than the 2nd grade cop-out at the end, which was really too predictable. I liked the sub-plot going on with Reilly's step brother, Sam, more than I did the main plot. It held more promise throughout the story.
This is the first time I'm reading a novel that's not written by a big-time author and/or published by a mainstream publisher. And boy was I surprised by the quality of this book!

This book, overall, is a great page turner! A likeable protagonist, great characters, an interesting detective story juxtaposed with some absolutely great action and atmosphere, all make up for an amazing book. I'm really looking forward to Riley Reid's next adventure, which I believe will not only have a great new story, but will continue the side love-story that was hinted at in this book. ;)
Riley Reid was abandoned by her stuck in the hippie days parents at age fifteen. She was taken in by a police detective until she went away to college. These days she's a private investigator.

She gets a case of wealthy parents who want their son's accidental heroin overdose looked into. His dead body was found dumped outside the emergency room at the local hospital. Police had ruled it an accidental suicide and they didn't believe it. Yes, he'd had drug problems, heroin was one, but he'd turned his life around, his girl friend was pregnant, and he was working, completing his education.

Liked this one. The author's prose flows smoothly and the pacing of this short novel kept me interested.

Recommended.
It’s a simple case, but the mystery isn’t the real purpose of the book. This story just sets the stage and introduces the cast of characters. The plot has a few twists and surprises. The ending is satisfying, but I found the motivation for the behavior and decisions to be inadequately explained.
The story is told in the first person, Chick Lit style. It’s a clean read without foul language or sex. The action scenes are about a chase, and use minimal violence. The plot moves along at a slow pace, but this is due to all the backstory that needs to be shared to introduce the characters.
The main faults of the book are that it wasn't professionally proofread, and it needs more synonyms. The same noun will be used five or six times in one paragraph, making the writing less skilled. A larger vocabulary would have made the scenes more interesting and lively.
Some scenes need more dialogue tags (he said/she said). In several places, the first line of dialogue isn’t identified with who said it. I had to read the entire scene to find a tag, and then count backwards to find out who said the first line. Once that was determined, I had to read the scene again to understand what was taking place.
Overall, it’s a pleasant read that uses complex characters to play out a simple story.
